The town of Youngtown was founded as the nation’s first retirement community in 1954 and incorporated as a municipality in 1960. From 2000 to 2010, Youngtown increased in population by 100 percent with the addition of the Agua Fria Ranch planned community. The town has evolved from a community of 80 percent 55 and older residents to one of 80 percent younger people. Families abound, and Youngtown is changing with the times.
Youngtown is home to more than 175 businesses, many of which have been active for 30 to 40 years. An additional 250 businesses located outside of the town add to the local economy. The town’s main industries are health-based and include two pharmaceutical compound pharmacies, Women’s International Pharmacy and Pet Health Pharmacy, in addition to LifeStream Complete Senior Living. A broad range of retail and service companies are located in the town’s Grand Avenue, town center and Olive Avenue business districts. One of the primary features of the retail sector is the many golf cart companies located in the town center business district.
Westgate City Center encompasses the iconic Arizona Cardinals University of Phoenix football stadium and Gila River hockey arena with vibrant, trendy retail and entertainment venues less than 10 minutes away. Baseball fans can enjoy Spring Training games with a 20 minute drive to Surprise Stadium - home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers or the Peoria Sports Complex, home of the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres.
Originally designed to be a retirement community, the town boasts a lovely lake, seven parks and a distinctively designed town center named Clubhouse Square. The modern library is frequented by residents from throughout the northwest valley because of its friendly atmosphere and its lovely setting in Greer Park. At the core of the town’s identity is the idea of being a community that honors its history, small town values, safety and community pride.
