Mammoth is located in the San Pedro River Valley of southeastern Pinal County. Two other communities, Oracle and San Manuel, are located within 10 miles of Mammoth and make up the tri-community area. In 1883, Frank Schulz opened the first mine in the Mammoth district. It was not possible to work ores at the site, so a stamp mill for this purpose was built on the San Pedro River and named Mammoth. In 1895, the Mammoth Mine changed hands and work stopped while a new system of milling was introduced. This was the beginning of the last gold mining revival in Arizona, except for a brief period during the Great Depression. Mammoth enjoyed renewed importance in 1936 when molybdenum (a metallic element) production began.
According to a study by the Center for Business Research, based on 2011 Census Zip Business Patterns, the primary economic activities in Mammoth are driven by retail trade, health care and social assistance, accommodation and food services. Agriculture is a secondary activity; however, employment figures are not available for farms and ranches.
Mammoth enjoys a mountainous setting near the many scenic attractions of the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona. The spectacular Galiuro and Catalina Mountains and rolling desert have enticed various television and movie companies to film on location. Scenic drives in the area include Pinal Pioneer Parkway which traverses a natural garden with many types of desert flora. Ranching activities in the area provide diversions. The region is a classic example of a range-and-basin ecological system, and it is noted for its geological features.
Two new housing development projects are being developed. Facilities available in the tri-community area include three libraries, six lighted ball fields, four parks, three swimming pools, three tennis courts and one golf course. The YMCA's Triangle Y Camp and the Salvation Army's Camp-O-Wood summer youth camps are located in the Coronado National Forest southwest of Mammoth. There is also a public picnic ground with facilities in Peppersauce Canyon in the same area. The Town of Mammoth has a very active Veterans of Foreign War Society (VFW) and a Senior Citizens Club through the Lions Club.
