Page is one of the youngest communities in the United States. It is in Northern Arizona, on the southern Utah border on the Colorado River. Page is approximately four hours north of Phoenix and four-and-a-half hours east of Las Vegas. It sits adjacent to the Glen Canyon Dam, the Navajo Nation and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area-Lake Powell, which is administered by the National Park Service.
In 1957, the town began as a housing camp for workers building the Glen Canyon Dam. In 1958, roughly 24 square miles of Navajo Nation land were exchanged for a larger tract in Utah, and “Government Camp” was born. This area was later called Page in honor of the Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner John C. Page. The city was incorporated in 1975, and Page is now home to more than 7,000 permanent residents. Page has been advertised as the center of the “Grand Circle” of National Parks and the center of Arizona’s “Canyon Country.” Major focal points around Page are the famous Horseshoe Bend, Colorado River, Antelope Canyon, Rainbow Bridge and Lake Powell.
Tourism, hospitality, a thriving industrial park, the federal government, Lake Powell, and public facilities are major contributors to Page’s economy. The city’s workforce is skilled in education, health care, trades, and artistry. The City of Page is a major landowner in the City, and hence has had a tremendous influence on the location of growth. The City is currently planning development for areas south of the mesa along Highway 89 and southeast along the Highway 98 corridor.
Scenic attractions include Lake Powell, which has a longer shoreline than the entire west coast of the United States. Lake Powell includes two marinas less than 15 minutes from Page City Hall. Slot canyons, such as the well-known Antelope Canyon, as well as Secret and Waterhole Canyons are available for walking and photography tours. Horseshoe Bend, a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River, has an overlook 4,200 feet above sea level. Other attractions include the John Wesley Powell Museum, Carl Hayden Visitor Center, Glen Canyon Dam, the Lake Powell National Golf Course, and many other opportunities to explore Navajo culture. Annual events include the balloon regatta, rodeos, powwows, a car show, a film festival, the Fourth of July, a half-marathon and the antique tractor and machine show.
Page has a community center, a modern library, a recreation center, softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, disc golf, Rim Trail, a swim beach, 18-hole championship golf course, a dog park, pickleball court, a natural amphitheater and six parks. Banner Hospital, 4 local medical clinics, multiple non-profits to assist with with social services, a soup kitchen, Salvation Army, and domestic violence services. Page has behavioral health services, physical therapy, and hospice services in town. Small town charm, big city expectations.
