Arizona Grant Recipient Wins National Video Contest
Mohave County One Stop Career Center takes home top honors
PHOENIX, AZ (October 17, 2011) — The Arizona Commerce Authority congratulates the Mohave County One Stop Career Center, for winning first place in a national video contest held September 14, 2011 in Washington, D.C. The video was selected as the top winner in the U.S. Department of Labor’s “Faces of Success” contest at the ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) Grantees Technical Assistance Institute.
Arizona was awarded $6 million in grant funding through the Department of Labor’s State Energy Sector Partnership (SESP) to develop a statewide strategy to integrate the workforce needs of targeted energy industries such as energy efficiency and renewable energy through education and training. The grant funds were made available by the ARRA and end on January 28, 2013.
The Arizona Commerce Authority, manages the statewide program, and praised Mohave County One Stop Career Center for utilizing the funding so effectively. One of the individuals assisted by these funds was unemployed Kingman resident Cliff Marshall. Mr. Marshall was trained and certified to work with hybrid cars. The training led him to land a new job.
As part of the contest rules, a 20-second video was produced to depict how Mr. Marshall’s benefited from the ARRA funding and how he found employment.
“The video shows the pivotal difference that our workforce system can make in getting a person connected with a job. And it shows how a person who perseveres and takes advantage of available opportunities can transform his or her own life. This is a story that is being played out across the nation with this type of ARRA funding,” said Jen Miles, Mohave County Workforce Development Manager.
“It is very rewarding that one of our state workforce partners receives national recognition for the amazing work they do,” said Rosalyn Boxer, Vice President Workforce Development. “The One Stop team did a remarkable job placing Mr. Marshall on a fast track for training and employment.”
Marshall hopes the focus remains on the One Stop and its services. “Everyone I met at the One Stop was a huge help in this process. It’s amazing how much effort they all put in to get me where I am today. I’m grateful to everyone there,” he said.
