JUST ANNOUNCED: Arizona Exports Reach All-Time High

PHOENIX, AZ (March 24, 2023) — In her International State of the State address today, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that Arizona companies exported a record amount of goods in 2022 as the state’s manufacturing sector continues to boom. Exports totaled $27.2 billion last year, eclipsing the pre-pandemic high in 2019 of $25 billion, and representing a $3 billion (12.6%) increase year over year.

Arizona’s largest category of exports occurred in Aerospace Parts and Products, which saw $4.6 billion in exports, followed closely by Semiconductor and Other Electronic Components at $4.4 billion, ranking fourth among all states. In the category of Metal Ores, Arizona exported $2.2 billion worth of goods, the most of any state.

“This success is due to our booming manufacturing sector — aerospace, semiconductors, and electronic components — and continued export outreach and support to our local Arizona businesses,” Governor Hobbs stated during her address.

Arizona’s top export countries included Mexico at $8.7 billion; Canada at $2.5 billion; China at $1.5 billion; and Netherlands at $1.1 billion. Countries that saw the greatest percentage growth of exports included Malaysia, which saw a $435.7 million increase (83.1%), and Singapore, which saw a $319.9 million increase (50.4%).

“Arizona’s consistent export growth is a reflection of our state’s strong and growing base of manufacturers, especially small and mid-sized businesses,” said Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. “With high-tech manufacturing facilities going up across our state, including battery, semiconductors, automotive, aerospace, and more, we expect exports to continue to climb considerably.”

As reported by the International Trade Administration, 5,591 Arizona companies exported goods in 2020, with 88% reflecting small and medium-sized enterprises.
